Polkadot (DOT)
Connect every blockchain. One protocol to unite them all.
What is Polkadot?
Polkadot is a protocol that connects independent blockchains into a unified network. In a world where hundreds of blockchains exist in isolation, Polkadot enables them to communicate, share data, and transfer assets to each other — without relying on centralized bridges or intermediaries.
The network uses a hub-and-spoke architecture. The central Relay Chain provides shared security and consensus, while individual blockchains (called parachains) plug in to benefit from that security while maintaining their own specialized logic and governance.
DOT, the native token, serves three purposes: governance (holders vote on network upgrades), staking (securing the network and earning rewards), and bonding (connecting new parachains to the network). This multi-purpose design aligns incentives across the ecosystem.
How Polkadot Works
Picture an airport with a central terminal (the Relay Chain) connected to many individual gates (parachains). Each gate is its own mini-airport optimized for a specific purpose — one for DeFi, another for gaming, another for identity. Flights (messages and assets) can travel between any gates through the central terminal, securely and automatically. DOT is the currency you use to access services, vote on airport policy, and reserve gates for new airlines (blockchains).
Polkadot Ecosystem
- Parachains — specialized blockchains for DeFi, identity, IoT, and more
- Cross-chain messaging (XCM) for seamless inter-blockchain communication
- Staking DOT to earn rewards and participate in network governance
- OpenGov — a fully decentralized on-chain governance system
- Substrate framework — build custom blockchains that can connect to Polkadot
Team & Development
Polkadot was founded by Gavin Wood, one of the co-founders of Ethereum and the creator of the Solidity programming language. Robert Habermeier and Peter Czaban are co-founders. Parity Technologies, founded by Wood, leads core development. The Web3 Foundation provides grants and oversees the ecosystem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are parachains?
Parachains are independent blockchains that run in parallel on Polkadot. Each is optimized for a specific use case while sharing Polkadot's security. They communicate with each other through cross-chain messaging, creating an interconnected network of specialized chains.
Can I stake DOT?
Yes. DOT staking supports both direct nomination and nomination pools. Pools let you stake with as little as 1 DOT. Rewards are distributed every era (24 hours), and you can choose which validators to support.
What wallet supports Polkadot?
Polkadot.js (browser extension), Nova Wallet (mobile), and Talisman are the most popular. Ledger hardware wallets also support DOT. Do not send DOT to an Ethereum address — they are different networks.
