Polygon (POL)
Ethereum, scaled. Fast and affordable for everyone.
What is Polygon?
Polygon is a scaling ecosystem for Ethereum that makes transactions faster and dramatically cheaper. While Ethereum provides security and decentralization, Polygon layers on top to deliver the speed and affordability needed for everyday use. It is the most widely adopted Ethereum scaling solution.
The network supports thousands of decentralized applications across DeFi, gaming, NFTs, and enterprise solutions. Major brands including Starbucks, Nike, and Reddit have chosen Polygon for their web3 initiatives because it offers Ethereum's security guarantees with practical transaction costs.
POL (formerly MATIC) is the native token used for transaction fees, staking, and governance across the Polygon ecosystem. The transition from MATIC to POL reflects the evolution from a single sidechain into a comprehensive network of zero-knowledge powered chains.
How Polygon Works
Think of Ethereum as a busy highway and Polygon as an express lane running alongside it. Instead of every car (transaction) fighting for space on the main road, Polygon bundles many transactions together, processes them on its own faster road, and then posts a summary back to Ethereum for final verification. You get the security of Ethereum with the speed and low cost of a dedicated lane. Your wallet address stays the same — you are just using a faster route.
Polygon Ecosystem
- Thousands of DeFi protocols, DEXs, and lending markets
- Enterprise adoption by major brands for loyalty and digital collectibles
- Gaming and metaverse applications with near-zero transaction costs
- Polygon zkEVM — zero-knowledge rollup for enhanced security
- Staking POL to secure the network and earn rewards
Team & Development
Polygon was founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic. Originally called Matic Network, the project rebranded to Polygon in 2021 to reflect its expanded vision. Polygon Labs leads development, and the project is supported by a global community of developers and validators.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to MATIC? Is POL the same thing?
POL is the upgraded version of MATIC. The Polygon network migrated from MATIC to POL as its native token. If you held MATIC, it was automatically converted to POL. They represent the same network and ecosystem.
Do I need POL for gas fees on Polygon?
Yes. POL is used to pay transaction fees on the Polygon network, similar to how ETH is used on Ethereum. Fees on Polygon are significantly lower — often fractions of a cent per transaction.
What is the difference between Polygon PoS and Polygon zkEVM?
Polygon PoS is the established sidechain with the largest ecosystem. Polygon zkEVM is a newer zero-knowledge rollup that inherits more of Ethereum's security. Both use POL and serve different use cases.
