Avalanche (AVAX)
Sub-second finality. Infinite scalability.
What is Avalanche?
Avalanche is a blockchain platform that achieves transaction finality in under one second. Where most networks require you to wait for multiple confirmations, Avalanche transactions are irreversible almost instantly. This makes it suitable for financial applications where speed and certainty matter.
The platform's unique architecture supports "subnets" — custom blockchains that inherit Avalanche's security while operating independently. This lets enterprises, game studios, and DeFi protocols create purpose-built networks tailored to their specific needs without congesting the main network.
AVAX serves as the native currency for transaction fees, staking, and as the base unit of account across the Avalanche ecosystem. The C-Chain, Avalanche's smart contract chain, is fully compatible with Ethereum tools and wallets, making it easy for developers to deploy existing applications.
How Avalanche Works
Traditional blockchains ask every participant to agree on every transaction before moving on — like taking a vote in a room of thousands. Avalanche uses a different approach called "repeated random sampling." Each validator asks a small, random group of other validators what they think. If most of that group agrees, the validator adopts that position and asks another random group. After a few rounds, the entire network converges on the same answer — in under a second. It is like a rumor that spreads through a crowd almost instantly.

- DeFi protocols on C-Chain with Ethereum-compatible smart contracts
- Custom subnets for gaming, enterprise, and regulated financial products
- Cross-chain bridges connecting Avalanche to Ethereum and other networks
- Staking AVAX to earn rewards as a validator or delegator
- Real-world asset tokenization through institutional partnerships
Team & Development
Avalanche was created by Emin Gun Sirer, a professor at Cornell University with decades of research in distributed systems. Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan "Ted" Yin co-founded the project. Ava Labs, the primary development company, is based in New York and employs a team of researchers and engineers from top institutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What chain should I use for AVAX?
Most users interact with the C-Chain (Contract Chain), which is compatible with MetaMask and Ethereum tools. When buying AVAX through Swaps, confirm your wallet supports the C-Chain network.
What are Avalanche subnets?
Subnets are independent blockchains that run on Avalanche infrastructure. They can have custom rules, tokens, and validators while benefiting from Avalanche's consensus. They are used for gaming, enterprise, and regulated applications.
Can I stake AVAX?
Yes. You can delegate AVAX to a validator with a minimum of 25 AVAX. Staking secures the network and earns rewards. Delegation can be done through the Avalanche Wallet or Core wallet.
