Storj (STORJ)
Decentralized cloud storage. Like AWS S3, but distributed.
What is Storj?
Storj is a decentralized cloud storage network where files are encrypted, split into pieces, and distributed across thousands of independent nodes worldwide. Instead of storing data on centralized servers owned by Amazon or Google, Storj uses spare hard drive space from individuals and small operators. This creates a more resilient, private, and cost-effective alternative to traditional cloud storage.
STORJ is the token used to pay for storage. Users pay STORJ to upload and store files. Node operators earn STORJ by providing storage space and bandwidth. The network uses erasure coding and encryption to ensure files remain private and available even if some nodes go offline.
Storj is used by developers, enterprises, and backup services as a drop-in replacement for Amazon S3. The Storj DCS (Decentralized Cloud Storage) is S3-compatible, making migration seamless.
How Storj Works
When you upload a file to Storj, it's encrypted on your device, split into 80 pieces using erasure coding, and distributed to 80 different storage nodes. Only 29 of those pieces are needed to reconstruct the file, so even if 51 nodes disappear, your data is safe. No single node operator can read your files because they only have encrypted fragments. You pay STORJ for the storage and bandwidth you use. Node operators earn STORJ proportional to the data they store and serve.

Team & Development
Storj was founded by Shawn Wilkinson in 2014. The project launched its first version in 2016 and migrated to a new architecture in 2019. Storj Labs, the company behind the network, raised funding from Google Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, and others. The network is open-source and operated by a global community of node operators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data safe on Storj if nodes can go offline?
Yes. Storj uses erasure coding to distribute your file across 80 nodes. You only need 29 pieces to reconstruct the file. Even if 51 nodes fail simultaneously (extremely unlikely), your data is still recoverable.
How much does Storj cost compared to AWS S3?
Storj is typically 50-80% cheaper than AWS S3, especially for egress (downloading data). Pricing is transparent and paid in STORJ tokens (though you can pay with a credit card, which is converted to STORJ automatically).
Where do I store STORJ?
STORJ is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Use MetaMask, Ledger, or any Ethereum wallet.
Can I sell or swap STORJ?
Yes. Swaps supports selling STORJ for fiat and swapping it for other tokens.
