Osmosis (OSMO)
The Cosmos DEX. Cross-chain trading for the Cosmos ecosystem.
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is a decentralized exchange built on the Cosmos blockchain. It specializes in cross-chain trading between assets in the Cosmos ecosystem (ATOM, JUNO, EVMOS, and dozens of others). Osmosis uses an automated market maker (AMM) model with unique features like customizable bonding curves and superfluid staking.
OSMO is the governance and incentive token. Liquidity providers earn OSMO rewards. Token holders vote on which liquidity pools receive rewards, protocol fee structures, and new features. Osmosis is one of the most actively governed DeFi protocols.
Osmosis handles hundreds of millions in daily volume and serves as the liquidity hub for the Cosmos ecosystem. It supports IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication), enabling native cross-chain swaps without bridges.
How Osmosis Works
Osmosis uses the standard AMM model (liquidity pools with x*y=k pricing), but adds customizable parameters. Pool creators can adjust swap fees, token weights, and bonding curves. Superfluid staking lets you stake OSMO while it's being used as liquidity — earning staking rewards AND trading fees at the same time. Cosmos IBC enables cross-chain swaps: you can trade ATOM for JUNO without wrapping tokens or using bridges. Osmosis validators secure the chain, and OSMO holders vote on liquidity incentives.
Osmosis Ecosystem
- Cross-chain DEX for Cosmos ecosystem assets
- Customizable liquidity pools with adjustable parameters
- Superfluid staking — earn staking + LP rewards simultaneously
- OSMO staking and governance
- Integration with Cosmos Hub, Juno, Evmos, and 50+ IBC-enabled chains
Team & Development
Osmosis was founded by Sunny Aggarwal and Josh Lee, developers from the Cosmos ecosystem. Sunny previously worked at Tendermint (now Ignite) and co-founded Sikka (a Cosmos validator). Osmosis launched in June 2021 and quickly became the leading DEX in Cosmos. The protocol is governed by OSMO holders, with development led by Osmosis Labs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is superfluid staking?
Normally, if you provide liquidity on a DEX, your tokens are locked and can't be staked. Superfluid staking on Osmosis lets you stake your OSMO while it's in a liquidity pool. You earn staking rewards AND trading fees at the same time. It's unique to Osmosis.
Why use Osmosis instead of Uniswap?
Osmosis is built for the Cosmos ecosystem. If you're trading Cosmos assets like ATOM, JUNO, or EVMOS, Osmosis is the best option. It uses IBC for native cross-chain swaps (no bridges). Uniswap is for Ethereum assets. Different ecosystems.
Where do I store OSMO?
OSMO is the native token of the Osmosis blockchain. Use Keplr Wallet (the leading Cosmos wallet), Ledger (with Cosmos app), or the Osmosis web interface.
Can I sell or swap OSMO?
Yes. Swaps supports selling OSMO for fiat and swapping it for other tokens.
