What is Decentraland?
Decentraland is a virtual world where users own land, build experiences, and monetize content. Every parcel of land is an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. You can buy land, develop it into games, art galleries, event spaces, or storefronts, and charge others to visit or interact. MANA is the currency of this world.
MANA is used to buy land parcels (LAND), wearables, names, and other in-world assets. It also governs the Decentraland DAO, where MANA and LAND holders vote on the rules of the virtual world — everything from content moderation policies to how the treasury is spent.
Decentraland has hosted virtual events for brands like Samsung, Sotheby's, and Coca-Cola. Artists display NFT galleries, DJs throw virtual concerts, and investors speculate on prime virtual real estate. It's an open metaverse — no company controls what you can build.
How Decentraland Works
Decentraland runs on Ethereum. LAND parcels are ERC-721 NFTs, each representing a 16x16 meter plot in the virtual world. You buy LAND with MANA, then use Decentraland's Builder tool or SDK to create 3D scenes. Visitors explore using the Decentraland client (web or desktop). All assets — land, wearables, names — are NFTs you truly own and can sell on OpenSea or in-world marketplaces. Governance is handled by the Decentraland DAO, where MANA and LAND are wrapped into voting tokens.

Team & Development
Decentraland was founded by Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano in Argentina. The project began in 2015 as a proof-of-concept and launched its 3D virtual world in 2020. The Decentraland Foundation initially oversaw development, but governance was transitioned to the Decentraland DAO in 2020, making it one of the first fully DAO-governed virtual worlds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need MANA to explore Decentraland?
No. You can walk around Decentraland for free without owning MANA or LAND. You only need MANA if you want to buy land, wearables, or participate in governance.
How much does LAND cost?
LAND prices vary widely based on location and demand. Parcels in high-traffic areas near popular districts can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Remote parcels are cheaper. Check the Decentraland marketplace for current listings.
Where do I store MANA?
MANA is an ERC-20 token. Use MetaMask, Ledger, Trust Wallet, or any Ethereum wallet. LAND and other Decentraland NFTs are ERC-721 tokens stored in the same wallets.
Can I sell or swap MANA?
Yes. Swaps supports selling MANA for fiat and swapping it for other tokens.
