Cosmos (ATOM)
The internet of blockchains. Connect every chain.
What is Cosmos?
Cosmos is a network of independent blockchains that can communicate with each other through a standardized protocol called IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication). Instead of one blockchain trying to do everything, Cosmos lets specialized chains handle different tasks while freely exchanging data and assets.
The Cosmos SDK makes it relatively straightforward to build custom blockchains. Major projects including Binance Chain, Cronos, Osmosis, and dYdX have all been built using Cosmos technology. Each chain is sovereign — it has its own validators, governance, and rules — but can still interoperate with the broader Cosmos ecosystem.
ATOM is the native token of the Cosmos Hub, the first and most prominent blockchain in the network. It is used for staking, governance, and as the primary economic unit securing the hub that coordinates cross-chain activity.
How Cosmos Works
Think of Cosmos as a franchise model for blockchains. The Cosmos SDK is like a ready-made business kit that lets anyone build their own blockchain without starting from scratch. IBC is the shipping network that lets all these independent businesses exchange goods (data and tokens) with each other. The Cosmos Hub, secured by ATOM stakers, acts as the central routing hub — like a postal sorting office that helps packages find their way between chains.
Cosmos Ecosystem
- IBC protocol connecting 50+ sovereign blockchains
- Cosmos SDK used by major chains: BNB Chain, Cronos, dYdX, Osmosis
- Staking ATOM to secure the Cosmos Hub and earn rewards
- Interchain Security — smaller chains can lease security from the Hub
- Decentralized governance through on-chain ATOM voting
Team & Development
Cosmos was co-founded by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman. The Tendermint consensus engine (now CometBFT) and Cosmos SDK were developed by Tendermint Inc. (now Ignite). The Interchain Foundation (ICF), a Swiss nonprofit, funds ecosystem development. The ecosystem is highly decentralized, with dozens of independent teams building different components.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cosmos Hub?
The Cosmos Hub is the first blockchain built on Cosmos and serves as the primary coordination point for the ecosystem. ATOM secures the Hub, and it routes IBC messages between connected chains.
Can I stake ATOM?
Yes. ATOM staking earns rewards (typically 15-20% APR) and lets you vote on governance proposals. You can delegate to validators through wallets like Keplr. There is a 21-day unbonding period when you unstake.
What wallet supports ATOM?
Keplr is the most popular Cosmos wallet, supporting ATOM and dozens of other Cosmos chains. Leap Wallet and Cosmostation are also excellent choices. Ledger works with Keplr for hardware security.
Can I sell or swap ATOM?
Yes. Swaps supports selling ATOM for fiat and swapping it for other tokens. Compare rates across providers for the best deal.
