Aptos (APT)
Built by ex-Meta engineers. Speed and safety by design.
What is Aptos?
Aptos is a layer-1 blockchain built by former Meta (Facebook) engineers who worked on the Diem (Libra) project. When Meta abandoned its blockchain ambitions, the team took their years of research and engineering and created Aptos — a network designed for safety, scalability, and developer experience.
The blockchain uses the Move programming language, which was designed specifically to make it harder to write buggy or exploitable smart contracts. Move treats digital assets as first-class resources that cannot be accidentally copied or destroyed, reducing the risk of the kind of hacks that plague other networks.
Aptos achieves high throughput through parallel transaction execution using its Block-STM engine, which lets the network process multiple non-conflicting transactions simultaneously rather than one at a time.
How Aptos Works
Most blockchains process transactions sequentially — like a single checkout lane at a store. Aptos opens multiple lanes simultaneously using its Block-STM engine. It optimistically assumes transactions do not conflict, processes them in parallel, and only re-executes the rare cases where conflicts arise. The Move language adds another layer of safety by treating tokens and NFTs as actual resources in the code — they cannot be duplicated or deleted by accident, only moved between owners.
Aptos Ecosystem
- Move programming language for safer smart contracts
- Parallel execution via Block-STM for high throughput
- Growing DeFi ecosystem including Liquidswap and Thala
- Enterprise partnerships including Microsoft and Google Cloud
- Staking APT to earn rewards and secure the network
Team & Development
Aptos was founded by Mo Shaikh (CEO) and Avery Ching (CTO), both former Meta engineers who led the Diem blockchain project. Aptos Labs raised $350 million from a16z, Jump Crypto, and other top investors before launching the mainnet in October 2022. The team draws heavily on the technology and research originally developed for Meta's blockchain initiative.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Move and why does it matter?
Move is a programming language designed for blockchain safety. It treats digital assets as resources that cannot be copied or accidentally destroyed. This makes smart contracts on Aptos inherently safer than on chains using Solidity.
What wallet supports APT?
Petra Wallet (by Aptos Labs) and Martian Wallet are the most popular options. Pontem Wallet and Ledger hardware wallets also support APT. Use an Aptos-specific wallet — Ethereum wallets will not work.
Can I stake APT?
Yes. You can delegate APT to validators to earn staking rewards. Petra and other Aptos wallets support staking natively.
Can I sell or swap APT?
Yes. Swaps supports selling APT for fiat and swapping it for other tokens.
